30.00/guest

  • Explore the ancient town of Cahir, rich in history and local heritage and visit the magnificent Norman Cahir Castle, former stronghold of the Butler family.

    There is so much more to Cahir than the magnificent Castle, this is a town with its own original history.  Walk in the Inch Field, under the walls and towers of this ancient fortress – the location for many famous movies in recent years e.g. Excalibur, Barry Lyndon, The Tudors, to name but a few.

    Take a walk with us along the banks of the Suir River, led by a friendly Local Guide.  Discover the River Suir fishing history and see the traditional salmon, trout, and eel weir.  Cahir was awarded ‘centre of excellence’ for fly-fishing in recent years.  Many a proud salmon has been caught here, and the river is teeming with brown trout.

    Visit the Viaduct high up above the river, scene of two railway disasters in the past, and nearby an amusing little lane called the Ha-Ha, where courting couples used to take a stroll.

    Walking on, we eventually arrive back in the Main Square, see here where markets were held, and a fountain erected by the grand Lady Margaret Butler Charteris, for the people of the town;

    See also a charming Dovecote, where the Quaker land-agent of a previous Earl kept his pigeons and doves;

    Enjoy the many sculptures by local Tipperary artists, in the Park beside the Castle, as we finish our walk.
