Walking Tour of Cashel Town & the Rock of Cashel

40.00/guest

The majestic Rock of Cashel, once the seat of the Kings of Munster – towers over the medieval town of Cashel. St Patrick is said to have visited here in the 5th century and baptised the Eoghanacht King Aenghus, who became the first Christian King of Munster. In later years, it became a major ecclesiastical centre – many of the majestic stone buildings telling of its religious past.

Join us on a magical tour, walking around the town of Cashel, led by a Local Guide, visiting over twenty places of historical interest, including:  Norman town walls with inset stone effigies; a Dominican abbey; the tiny, thatched cottage where workers lived with their families; and a ducking pond where wrongdoers were punished in ancient times!

Now a vibrant modern town, it contains a chequered past, Oliver Cromwell’s deputy, Lord Inchoquinn, is said to have put over 3,000 of its inhabitants to death under orders from Oliver Cromwell himself – see Kearney’s castle, where his men were billeted in the centre of the town.

Origin of Guinness:– Visit the recently renovated Cashel Palace, built as a residence for the Archbishop, now a luxurious Hotel.  Hops for the famous Guinness were first grown here in its gardens.

And for a grand finale, visit the magnificent Rock of Cashel, on the hill above the town, as part of your tour.

The majestic Rock of Cashel, seat of the historic Munster Kings since the 3rd – 4th century A.D., looks down from its lofty heights on the old medieval town of Caiseal Mumhain – or Cashel of Munster.  Hence the favourite name for our town: “City of the Kings”.  Learn all about the ancient Royal Clan of the Eoghanacht, who ruled here as Kings of Munster, in centuries past.  Also, how Cashel eventually became a centre of ecclesiastical splendour, a home for many monasteries and churches, and how this influenced the surrounding town we see today.

Envisage what life was like in medieval times, as we stroll inside the ancient walls of this historic town.  Picture the horses with their riders and carriages coming to drink at the water fountains, in the town’s centre, or imagine the funeral processions along the “Walk of the Dead”, as they continued slowly up the hill for burial in the family graveyard at the Rock.

Visit the gardens of the Cashel Palace Hotel – one time home to resident Archbishops, and the very origin of the drink we know today as “Guinness”.

Feel the warm welcome extended to all visitors no matter where they hail from. As we say in Ireland:

“Cead Mille Faillte!” or “A Hundred Thousand Welcomes!”

Length of this Tour: 2.5 hours

Starting Point:  This Tour starts in the Plaza, in the Town Centre, and finishes in the same location.

You are then taken on a circuit of the medieval town, where we will show you over twenty historic features, including the ancient Town Wall encircling the buildings since Norman times.  We finish the Tour at the Rock of Cashel, where a guided tour of this remarkable site is included in your visit.
